Our Philosophy
At The Common Dog, we believe that successful dog training begins with a strong and balanced relationship between dog and owner. Our approach focuses on clear communication, thoughtful structure, and building engagement so dogs understand what is expected of them in everyday life.
Dogs thrive when their lives include both freedom and guidance. There is a time and place for play, affection, and excitement, but also a need for structure, boundaries, and calm behaviour in the home and in public spaces. By creating this balance, we help dogs develop impulse control, emotional stability, and the ability to make better choices in real-world environments.
We believe dogs should be able to enjoy being dogs while also learning how to live politely within our human world. Through training, we help dogs understand when it is appropriate to explore, play, and express themselves, and when it is important to listen, settle, and respond to their handler.
Another key part of our philosophy is building value in the relationship between dog and owner. When dogs learn that engagement with their person leads to positive outcomes, they are far more likely to choose their handler over distractions such as other dogs, people, or wildlife.
Our goal is not just to teach commands, but to help owners develop the skills and understanding needed to guide their dog confidently in everyday situations.
At The Common Dog, we aim to create dogs who are calm, responsive, and able to navigate the world with their owners in a balanced and enjoyable way
What Makes Our Training Different
Our training focuses on helping dogs succeed in the real world, not just in a quiet training environment.
We place a strong emphasis on calm behaviour, engagement with the handler, and neutrality around distractions such as other dogs, people, and wildlife. Rather than encouraging dogs to interact with everything they see, we teach them how to remain focused and responsive to their owner.
The goal is to create dogs who can walk politely, settle in the home, and navigate everyday environments calmly and confidently.
How We Train
We use positive reinforcement such as food, toys, play, and affection to teach and strengthen desired behaviours. Play is something we incorporate often, as it can help build engagement, confidence, and motivation for learning.
While we teach important skills such as loose leash walking, recall, and basic obedience, our focus goes beyond commands. We work to help dogs develop impulse control, emotional regulation, and the ability to remain calm and responsive around distractions.
Training sessions often take place in real-world environments so dogs can practice these skills where they matter most.
Tools & Techniques
Our training approach incorporates principles of learning theory and behaviour science. We reinforce behaviours we want to see more of and interrupt or discourage behaviours that are unsafe or undesirable.
Depending on the dog’s needs, we may also incorporate techniques such as counter-conditioning, desensitization, and behaviour adjustment training.
Training tools may sometimes be recommended, and when they are, they are always properly fitted, introduced thoughtfully, and demonstrated with the owner during a training session to ensure they are used safely and effectively.
